Arthur first wrote a short story called 'The Sentinel' which was first published in 1948. This was rewritten in 1968 into the 2001 story that most people will know. In the shortest form, it is the story of a giant Obilisk found on the Moon and the search for its source. One Oblisiks existed on Earth when humans were primates but over time disappeared through damage from weather and contact through humans although that is not explicitly stated. A spacecraft with three passengers embark on a journey to Jupiter to make first contact. Along the way, the ship's computer HAL 9000 sees the crew as a threat and manages to kill all but one of the passengers.
