A pair of star that is 1000 light years away is wtnessed disappearing for no reason. Stars don't disappear, they always explode first then either turn into White Dwarfs, Neutron Star or Black Holes. The Commonwealth decide to build a spaceship to investigate. All interplanetary travel has been through wormholes and no wormhole can be built to take them the distance necessary. A craft that will open wormholes to take them closer is built. That craft is called 'Second Chance'. Wormhole travelling is through portals on land where trains usually take them through.

When they get there, they discover the stars had been enclosed in some shielding which disappears when they arrive. Behind the shielding is two stars with two different races, one referred to as the Primes. The other is not said and have been enslaved. When the Second Chance is spotted, it is attacked and two of the crew members are interrogated about the humans existance. The Primes launch an attack on the Commonwealth.

There is a group of humans called the 'Guardians of Selfhood' who want to prove the existance of an alien race that had crashed on the planet 'Far Away.' They are classed as a terrorist organisation and are hunted down as one. Paula Myo is tasked with bringing down the Guardians but warms to their objectives over the story.

There are a number of small stories which connect up at the end of the either this one or the sequel 'Judas Unchained'.
