According to the legend, Reavers are men who have strayed beyond the outskirts of the planets in the Firefly galaxy. They have lost all sense of humanity and are surviving the best and only way they can which to us, that is savagery. When they capture your ship, they will kill and devour the occupants, they've become cannibals. Their ships are bigger and faster than the normal, this is so that they can catch their prey. There had been speculation that the Reavers would be aliens but that idea has been scotched for now.
The truth however is different, the all powerful Alliance carried out experiments on the planet Miranda to alter the temperaments of the occupants. The virus seemed to work for 90% of the people but then the side-effects started. Those that the virus worked for started becoming lazy to a deadly extents, that they did nothing, eventually dying. The other 10%, it turned them into the Reavers, the bloody-thirty cannabals that exist in the galaxy. The Alliance warned everyone away from Miranda saying it was unstable and dangerous.
