Space Above and Beyond

Earth has been attack by a hostile alien race known as the Chigs. The series follows a group of battle pilots as they defend the Earth and its planets against the attacks. Unlike Star Trek, the first contact with Aliens, the Vulcans is fiendly. Their first contact is hostile. It's purely Earth vs. The Chigs. The first contact takes place on a planet called 'Tellus'. We learn in later episodes that the main character Nathan West's girlfriend was on the planet that got attacked. The whole story is told through the adventures of the 58th Brigade known as the 'Wildcards'. They are based onboard the U.S.S. Saratoga. It's success is unlike that of Star Trek or Andromeda. It got the chop after 24 episodes where three characters got killed off in the last episode. Whether they re-energise this or leave it for the history books is openbut its looking as though it will stay on the shelf. It could be seen as an early attempt at updating the Battlestar Galatica television series, instead of making the humans come from another world, they are Earthlings this time round.

This was a terrific TV show that sadly was canceled after only one season.I'm a huge fan of the new Battletar Galactica, but Space:Above & Beyond preceded BG by seven years & I can't help but note the similarities between the two shows. Both have a dark, grim, edgy atmosphere with complex & flawed characters. Both involve robots created by humans which rebelled against their creators;Silicates on S:A&B,Cylons on BG. Both shows avoided the commonplace choices made by so many outer space series of having their respective universes teeming with alien life even though S:A&B did have an alien race as their enemy. And finally, both shows showed restraint by not having a spatial-phenomena-of-the-week,though a few encounters would occur now and then. I commend both series for being original as regards these plot devices, but I have to say that S:A&B got there first.
