New Planet, Sedna
Scientists have discovered a new world further out than Pluto, it's been called Sedna, after an Inuit god. The name will almost certainly change to fit in with the other planets. A debate is ranging as to whether it is a planet or a meteor. However, this debate might come to a head soon because a moon is believed to be circling it. For more on this, visit http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3515658.stm As it is nearly three time further out than Pluto, it begs the question as to whether there are other planetoids in between and just how many planets there are in our system.
Galaxy's Largest Diamond
The Galaxy's largest diamond has been found in the Centaurus constellation. It is the remains of a white dwarf that has solidified. It is estimated to be worth 10 billion trillion carats and its diameter just more than a third of the Earth. Nicknamed Lucy after the woman in the Beatles song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'. It was discovered by Harvard-Smithsonian Centrefor Astrophysics. Bad news though is that it will take 50 years travelling at the speed of light to get there. Read more at the BBC Website
Oxygen discovered elsewhere.
Scientists have discovered oxygen in another part of the galaxy. This enhances the chances of finding life on other worlds. Unlike Earth, the gas is produced naturally where here it is produced by plant-life. The discovery centres around the planetary gas giant 'HD 209458b' also known as 'Osiris'. Read more at the European Space Agency website.
Planet X ?
The largest objects found outside the path of the planet Pluto has been discovered. It is currently known as 2004 DW. It is believed there are more objects in the Kuiper Belt which are as big or even bigger to be discovered. More details can be found on the BBC Website.
