The British are coming.... or going where no Briton has gone before...
February 15, 2008, 12:10 am
For many years, the British Government had refused to finance its nationals into space. Helen Sharman, the first Briton in space got there through a commercially sponsored competition. The other three Michael Foale, Piers Sellars and Nicholas Patrick all had to give up British Citizenship to go into space. Now there is talk or spin as some might say that the British Government may now change its mind on the subject. Ian Pearson, the Science and Innovation Minister hinted yesterday that it would change. We could see someone in space by 2020 or earlier or be part of the team that makes the maiden journey to Mars. A new British space centre would be built in Harwell, Oxfordshire to help with space innovation. Space is the next big thing for people to go. Richard Branson is soon to be the owner of the first company to offer space trips. Other companies will follow and holidaying on the moon will be as commonplace as holidaying in Spain. There are people who are aggrieved at us spending large sums but there will also be opposition to anything...
Sputnik 1's Birthday
October 4, 2007, 4:05 pm
It is now fifty years since the Russians launched Sputnik 1 and kick-started the exploration of space. Some people saw it as a threat because the Russians had got there first, others were pleased because it showed theres no limit to our abilities. Some twelve years later, America landed on the moon. We now talk of co-operation not competition as we aim to build a base on the moon as a stepping stone for further afield. We've already collaborated by putting the International Space Station in place so a trip to the moon and beyond shouldn't be too much should it? We're already in an age when people (e.g. Dennis Tito) can holiday in space, it won't be long before we can take package holidays in space. Maybe we'll terraform Mars so the stories of Kim Stanley Robinson come true?
Galaxy Zoo
July 11, 2007, 10:04 pm
A friend sent me a link the other day to a website called
Galaxy Zoo
. Its purpose is to categorize a million galaxies. They're split into two main groups ellipticals and spirals. Irregulars and Lenticulars are not included, the former being too faint and the second are classed as ellipticals. What you do is is register with the site then progress to identify the different types of galaxies that they show you. Before you get to identify the galaxies, there is a test to make sure you know your galaxies. Its free to join so if you've got a few free hours, have a go.
The X-Large Terrestrial
July 1, 2007, 6:42 pm
It was recently reported in the Sun newspaper that a UFO that was recently spotted is the largest ever seen. The report does not say when the incident took place, only where. That where is 40 miles west of Alderney by a pilot and his crew. The objects are said to look like two yellow cigars. There is no indication of any 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' or any abduction of the passengers as there's no missing time. Its unfortunate that the people on the plane, esp. the passengers did not have one camera between them. Source:

It is reminiscent of news article back in 1995 about British Airways pilots spotting a UFO. Source:

Doctor Who's Series End
July 1, 2007, 6:17 pm
The third series of the reborn franchise has come to an end. One of the Doctor's greatest foes is now dead. However as we saw at the very end, his ring is picked up. It is reminiscent of the end of the 1980's Flash Gordon where it is insinuated that he'll be back. UG is in no doubt that the Master will return, they simply could not kill off such a major character. We also say goodbye to Freema whom some people say was sacked. Whatever the case, the next series will kick off with a new sidekick again.
