On what would have been Carrie Fisher's 63rd birthday, Lucasfilm and Disney released the last trailer for episode IX, "Rise of Skywalker". Carrie Fisher played the role of Princess Leia, Carrie unfortunately passed away on the 27th December 2016 and instead of using C.G.I. which they had done to bring back Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One, the producers are using unused scenes made during the previous film productions. The film is the ninth film in the Skywalker family trilogy and it is hoped to tie up a number of loose ends.
The previous two films, Star Wars VII- The Force Awakens and Star Wars VIII - The Last Jedi have underwhelmed the audiences. The Force Awaken was said to be a near copy of the first film, that is with finding an orphan on a desert planet, finding a smuggler to get them to the resistance and then to attack and destroy a Death Star like object.
The Last Jedi saw The Rebel Alliance, now the Resistance having their secret hideout attacked and then forced to flee. It also saw Rey being trained by a Jedi Master, Luke Skywalker. Rey like Luke Skywalker in Empire Strikes Back leaves the Jedi training behind to rescue her colleagues.
There are a number of new planets and environments to be seen. The first planet is a jungle planet where the Resistance is believed to have reunited after escaping The First Order onslaught at the end of the previous film. From there, it is rumoured that the next planet will be a desert planet, whether that planet is Jakku or Tatooine is to be seen. Jakku was the planet in which Rey had been abandoned before becoming part of the resistance when Finn comes into her life.
The third major planet in the clip is of a water world in which the waves are high and the remains of the Death Star destroyed in Return of the Jedi is partly submerged. This is where the final battle between Rey and Kylo Ren will take place. There will be a battle between Rey and Kylo outside and inside the Death Star remains.
Scenes of fighting and running about inside the Death Star has echoes and nods to the first film where Han Solo along with Chewbacca were attempting to rescue Princess Leia.
There is a brief glimpse of Emperor Palpatine, the evil Sith Lord who orchestrated the rise of the Empire in the prequels and who controlled the galaxy in the originals. Palpatine was believed to have died after seemingly being killed by Darth Vader who wanted to save his son. Like previous masters of the force such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, Palpatine has found a way to survive or come back from the dead.
We may also find out Rey heritage after the dismal story that Kylo Ren gave in the second film. Kylo said they were no-bodies who sold her for nothing. Reys background was hated so maybe they'll come up with something better this time round.
The film marks the final time we will see all these characters in a film. In the clip, C-3PO says a poignant farewell to his friends. C-3PO and R2-D2 are the only characters to have appeared in eight of the nine films. C3PO played by Anthony Daniels is the only actor to have appeared in eight of the nine films. Kenny Baker who controlled R2-D2 died in August 2016, control of R2-D2 was passed to fellow actor Jimmy Vee.
After the less than impressive Solo film, Disney are taking a break with Star Wars films. Disney blame Star Wars fatigue for poor returns but the truth is that the films have been below average. Until they accept the quality and not the quantity was the problem, they will never make Star Wars a success. They only have to look at the quality and quantity of their Marvel films to know Quantity is not a problem for the Star Wars films.
