Area 51 at Groom Lake, Nevada is the United States Air Force secret research and development area. It is also rumoured to be the place that the U.S. Government is allegedly holding aliens and alien technology according Conspiracy Theorists. The area has long been associated with aliens since Bob Lazar claimed he worked there and that there are aliens in the base.
The area got major attention when it was featured in the film Independence Day in 1995. The film had aliens arrive in large round mother ships and who were hellbent on destroying all life on the planet. The heroes of the day were U.S.A.F. pilot Capt. Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), a meteorologist who travel up to the mother ship to disable and destroy the force field preventing Earth from defending itself.
What started off as a Internet joke about people planning on storming the base on the 20th September has mushroomed into a global phenomena. Over a million and a half people have now signed up to the Facebook event with another 1.2 million expressing an interest.
Probably a few die-hards will turn up on the day but over 1 million people, no way will that many people turn up on the day. They believe that going in large numbers will over-whelm the security and be unstoppable in trying to get to the truth.
For the record, U.G. won't be there. Its strongly recommended that you don't as security will shoot on sight and they have done that in the past. The Express reports that a man was shot dead when he tried to break into the base in January so its not unheard of of being shot.
In 2012, Irish comedian Andrew Maxwell went to Area 51 as he was making a program on conspiracy theories. He attempted whilst a lack lustered to find out about Area 51 was turned away from the base by turning up at the base. He was arrested by security and interrogated by the F.B.I. for four hours before eventually being let go after someone in the local police recognised him and he was allowed to go. Chortle
