What are the Infinity Stones in Avengers?

The Infinity Stones are six stones that are spread unevenly throughout the universe that have immense power. They were created at the same time as the The Big Bang by the Cosmic Entities. They were sought after by Thanos who had created an Infinity Gauntlet to harness their power and kill off half of the Universe's population.

Once Thanos had managed to wipe out the population, he destroyed the stones so that anyone coming to undo the damage couldn't. The only way to repair the damage was to go back in history and borrow the stones to create a new gauntlet.

List of Infinity Stones

Below is the list of the Infinity/Soul Stones that Thanos sought.

Soul Stone - Orange

The orange soul stone was located by Thanos on Vormir, a desertted rock planet. The only occupant of the planet was Red Skull who had been sent there after he was thwarted by Steve Rogers during the Second World War. The only way to get the stone was to sacrifice a life for a life so Thanos sacrificed his adopted daughter, Gamora for the stone.

Space Stone - Blue

The stone was found and investigated by Hydra under the control of Red Skull during the Second World War. S.H.I.E.L.D. would eventually retrieve the stone and ultimately hand it to the Asgardians for safekeeping. Thanos would attack Asgard to retrieve the object.

Mind Stone - Yellow

Thanos had this stone from the start but he then leant it to Loki to launch the first attack on Earth culminating in the first Avengers defence. It would then change hands a number of times before being used as the head stone in Vision.

Reality Stone - Red

The Reality Stone was to be used by Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves to turn the world to Darkness. The plan failed through the combined efforts of both Thor, Loki and Jane Foster. Loki had been given an opportunity to redeem himself which he took. Loki faked his own death during the battle.

Power Stone - Purple

The power stone was the stone that Peter Quill found at the start of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It would be retrieved by Ronan the Accuser then after his defeat, handed to the Nova Corps. Thanos would then retrieve it from the Nova Corps.

Time Stone - Green

The Stone was referred to as the Eye of Agamotto. When the Eye was created, they did not know the power of the stone at the time. The stone was turned into a pendant and handed down over time to eventually find itself in the hands of Dr Stephen Strange. The Stone allows the person to manipulate time.
