Aragorn - Lord of the Rings

Aragorn from Lord of the Rings played by Viggo Mortensen.

Aragorn is a fictional male Human king in the Lord of the Rings film series who was played on screen by Viggo Mortensen.

Aragorn was initially introduced as Strider, a mysterious man in a bar in Bree. When Aragorn was a child, his childhood elven name was Estel which meant Hope. When the four hobbit friends (Samwise Gamgee, Frodo Baggins, Peregrin -Pippin- Took, Merry) make a commotion, Aragorn becomes involved and takes the four friends to a room to hide out. The group of four hobbits were being chased by the Ringwraiths, faceless men on black horses and Aragorn helps them to hide from the wraiths. Aragorn sees to it that he aims to protect them from harms way. Aragorn takes them to Rivendell where the Friendship of the Ring is formed.

It was Aragorns' ancestor Isildur who was responsible for chopping off Lord Sauron's hand with the ring on it. Chopping off the hand made Sauron disintegrate leaving just the ring behind. Instead of destroying the ring, Isildur kept the ring which would then find itself in the possession of Gollum. Isildur looses the ring when he swims in a river escaping from Orcs. The story of the ring is described at the beginning of the first film in the Lord of the Rings series.

Breakup of the Fellowship

After the battle of Parth Galen, the fellowship breaks up, it is also the battle where Boromir is killed. Frodo and Samwise depart from the Fellowship, going on their own whilst the other two Hobbits stay with Aragorn. Aragorn has a romantic liason with Arwen and once Lord Sauron has been defeated, Aragorn marries the Elf maiden. It is only when the ring has been destroyed and the world is at peace again that Aragorn is revealed to be the King of Isildur. and heir to the throwns of Arnor and Gondor.

Aragorn's sword is Narsil which was reforged for Aragorn on his mission to destroy Lord Sauron. Aragorn calls the new sword Anduril.

The Army of the Dead, a group of ghostly undead people are persuaded with ease to fight against the Orcs in the books by Aragorn. However in the films, Aragorn has to fight them to earn their trust. Its just an extra fight scene to make the story more enjoyable. In the film, Aragorn had been given a sword of power by Elrond in order to prove he is worthy of the Army of the Dead attention.,

Return of the King

At the end of the mission, Aragorn returns home to be proclaimed King hence the title of the third book. He keep his lineage secret until the end, wishing not to have any special treatment by either side. He unites both the Southern (Gondor) and Northern (Arnor) kingdoms of Men.
