Chewbacca in the Films

Revenge of the Sith

In the film, Chewbacca has not yet met Han Solo, Chewbacca is on Kashyyyk, readying for the battle between The Old Republic and the droids of The Separatists. It is only a brief scene with Chewbacca meeting Yoda. It is the only film where Chewbacca doesn't appear with any of the main originals cast members.

Chewbacca noises are mainly groans which Han Solo manages to interprete. Chewie is able to pilot the Millennium Falcon Solo and his preferred weapon of choice is the Crossbow.

Peter Mayhew plays Chewbacca in every film that he has appeared in.

It is expected that Chewbacca will reappear in the sequels, Episode VII and others. There might even be a spin-off film of his. He will be back for Episode VII and will still be played by Peter Mayhew.

A New Hope

The first time we get to meet Chewbacca is when Obi-Wan Kenobi along with Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, and C-3PO are in Mos Eisley looking for a flight to Alderaan. Obi-Wan has just done a deal with Han Solo to do get to the other planet.

When they reach the location of where Alderaan is supposed to be, all that they can see is asteroids and that the planet has been destroyed. The Millennium Falcon is captured by a tractor beam and brought inside the Death Star. The occupants inside the Millennium Falcon make their way inside and in to a control room where Luke comes up with an idea to rescue Princess Leia. Luke's plan is to have Chewbacca in cuffs and take him to the prisoner block where they will then rescue the princess. The plan nearly works up and they rescue the princess but in escaping, the plan goes awry as they are dive into a trash compactor with a creature inside and the walls moving in. Fortunately, R2-D2 manages to reverse the compressors and they make it out of the compactor. The rescuers and Leia make it back to the Millennium Falcon where they manage to escape the Death Star as Obi-Wan managed to disable the tractor beam that brought them into the space station into the first place.

The Millennium Falcon flies to Yavin IV where the Princess is handed over to The Rebel Alliance. Chewbacca helps Han Solo shoot Darth Vader 's TIE Fighter therefore enabling Luke to blow the Death Start up. At the end of the movie, Chewbacca along with Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are given medals for their involvement in blowing up the Death Star.

The Empire Strikes Back

Chewbacca is hiding with the rest of the Rebels on the ice planet of Hoth. Chewie joins Han to investigate a probe on the planet and accidentally alerts the probe that its being watched forcing Han to shoot and destroy the probe. Destroying the probe has alerted the Empire that the Rebels are on the planet. The evacuation order has been given and everyone starts fleeing from the oncoming Empire assault.

Chewbacca goes with Han, C-3PO, Princess Leia on board the Millennium Falcon to avoid being captured by the Empire. The Millennium Falcon hides inside an asteroid belt and then inside a cave on one of the asteroids which turns out to be the stomach of a giant worm which the Millennium Falcon manages to escape from before being swallowed. The Millennium Falcon's next destination is the planet of Bespin where Han's friend Lando Calrissian lives.

On Bespin, the rebels are treated well enough but Lando has done a deal with Darth Vader and Han is put into carbonite freeze and handed over to the bounty hunter Boba Fett for transportation to Jabba, the Hutt. Chewbacca is to stay behind on Bespin with the others. During the time on Bespin, C-3PO is blown up into parts and Chewbacca finds those parts and reassembles the droid. When Lando turn coats again, he frees the rebels and they all escape on the Millennium Falcon.

Return of the Jedi

Chewbacca turns up at Jabba's palace as a prisoner of a bounty hunter but is really Princess Leia. Chewbacca is reunited with Han Solo but their reunion is short lived and they are to be fed to the Sarlaac Pit. On the barge, Han Solo and Chewbacca are forced to walk the plank but Luke has other ideas and their escape begins in earnest. Whilst Luke Skywalker is dealing with the threat from Jabba's men, Chewbacca and Han are trying to save Lando who has fallen over board. Once Jabba's men have been dealt with and Lando and the droids rescued, the rebels leave the area and depart from Tatooine.

At the reunion of the Rebel Alliance, Chewbacca agrees to go with Han Solo to the Moon of Endor where they will destroy the shield generator for the new Death Star. On the planet, Chewbaca's hunger gets the better of him and they end up in a trap and Ewok food before C-3PO is able to pretend he is a deity and get them released. The rebel alliance launch an attack on the shield generators back entrance but its a trap. However with help from the Ewoks, the rebels are able to defeat the Empire and blow up the shield generator.

The Force Awakens

In the first sequel of the original trilogy, Chewbacca appears in the trailer with his long time friend Han Solo where Solo announces that they are Home. Its not clear where home is but speculation could mount on either Coreilla, Han's birth planet or Chewbacca's Kashyyyk. In the end, it turns out that Han Solo is indeed talking about the Millennium Falcon that has finally recovered. He survives the film and is now seemingly captain of the Falcon with Rey.

The Last Jedi

Chewbacca travels with Rey to visit Luke Skywalker who has hidden himself away from all the stripe in the galaxy on the planet of Ahch-To. After Luke Skywalker refuses to help Rey learn the ways of the force, Luke shuts himself away in a hut. After Rey gets nowhere banging on the door of the hut, Chewbacca breaks open the door and greets his friend once more.

Unlike in previous films, Chewbacca's land fighting are long gone. Chewbacca makes friends with Porgs which are small bird-like creatures that just squawk. When Chewbacca is trying to eat a roasted bird, the Porgs all clamber for what seems like wanting food, Chewbacca frightens them off but one stays.

In the final battle on the mineral planet of Crait, Chewbacca flies the Millennium Falcon into battle to protect the Resistance from The First Order onslaught. Rey is onboard the Millennium Falcon providing gun support.

Solo - A Star Wars Anthology
