Nick Fury is a fictional male Human in the The Avengers comic series who was played on screen by Samuel L. Jackson. Nick Fury is the head of the millitary and intelligence organisation known as S.H.I.E.L.D. S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. It is an organisation that is roughly equivalent to A.R.G.U.S. (Advanced Research Group Uniting Superhumans) in the D.C. Comics universe.
Nick is the instigator of The Avengers Initiative which he first mentions when he meets Tony Stark at the end of the Iron Man film.
When Nick Fury was first created, Nick was a white man in his forties with an eye patch. He was not at that time leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. but a group of World War 2 commandoes. He was first moved to the C.I.A. and then relocated to S.H.I.E.L.D.
Unlike S.H.I.E.L.D., the C.I.A. organisation actually exists and is the primary civillian intelligence organisation of the United States Government, not answerable to the Department of Defense but direct to the President.
Nick first made his movie appearance in the David Hasslehoff movie, "Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD" where he is recalled back into service when Hydra, the terrorist organisation is threatening the world. The trailer for the film can be found YouTube, where else?
When Marvel started the new wave of movies, Samuel L. Jackson was given the role. Sam wore the distinctive eye patch. It annoyed a number of purists because Nick had always been white so far. Marvel retired the white depiction of the character and introduced Nick Fury Jr, who was black.
Unlike the characters of Marvel, Nick is a bit character who makes guest appearances in the films, mostly at the end. He first appeared in the first Iron Man movie when Nick goes to visit Tony Stark in the end credits scene.
Unlike the other characters, he rarely does any running about, preferring to ordering people around and asking people to join S.H.I.E.L.D. Sam has made guest appearances in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series for instance, he appeared to castigate Phil Coulson after the S.H.I.E.L.D. plane was damaged in the second episode of the first series.
For the Captain Marvel film which is set in 1995, Samuel has been de-aged, he has been given hair so he looks younger. We learn how Nick Fury looses his eye meaning he has to wear an eye patch.
In the comic, Nick looses his eye from sharpnel during the war which gets worse over time until it is no longer functioning. In the movie however, he looses his eye in Captain Marvel film when it is scratched out by a cat. The cat named Goose is actually a Flerken, an alien race that looks like a cat but has tentacles that come out of its mouth. Goose scratches Nicks eye out forcing hi to wear a false eye and a patch.
The uneventful nature of how Nick looses his eye has been controversial. To have it damaged in that way was classed as a cop-out by many fans considering how it was lost in the comics.
In the comics, the name came from Wasp who wanted a name to strike fear into the enemy. In the movie, Nick comes across a picture of Carol Danvers with her call sign 'Avenger'. It is that picture that gives Nick the idea for the name of their organisation.
Nick first appears at the end of Iron Man when he asks Tony Stark if he wants to join the Avengers Initiative. It marks the beginning of the Marvel Universe series of films. He has played a role in all the main Avenger films but they are all still cameo parts compared to the other roles.
The most substantive appearance that he's appeared in has been in Captain Marvel which is set in the 90s. Nick finds Captain Marvel and helps for the majority of the film.
He briefly appears in Infinity Wars along with Maria Hill at the end of the film. The two of them are seen disintegrating as he makes a call to Captain Marvel for help. In the second film, he is again only a bit part when the heroes join the battle against Thanos.
Its unlikely there will be a Nick Fury film but never say never. Whilst some actors are hoping to see their Marvel days behind them, Samuel L. Jackson is seemingly happy to carry on. Sam will make a brief appearance in the first Marvel film following Endgame, that is Spiderman, Far from Home. He'll probably also appear in the Black Widow movie to welcome Natasha Romanoff into the organisation.
