Padme Amidala

Padme Amidala is a fictional female Naboon queen, senator in the Star Wars series. The character was portrayed on screen by Natalie Portman. Her allegiance / loyalty is to The Old Republic. Padme Amidala is a Senator, Queen and Wife all rolled into one. At the beginning of the trilogy, Padme Nuberrie is the elected queen of Naboo at the tender age of about 14. Padme is the elected leader of her people even though she is referred to as Queen on the planet of Naboo. Padme request help from the Jedi Knights when her planet is under seige from the Trade Federation who want to impose new taxes on the trade routes. The Trade Federation is led by Nute Gunray, a greedy individual who was easily manipulated to tax the trade routines. Padme is not one to go silently, her people elected her to protect and defend her planet and that is what she plans to do. Padme does not agree to the new taxes.

During the films, Padme becomes the target for many of the Separatists that want her dead. Padme falls in love with one of the Jedis that was sent to protect her in the second film, the Attack of the Clones. Throughout the course of the second film, she grows closer to her protector Anakin Skywalker and end up getting married in secret. Anakin Skywalker would later become one of the more iconic characters in cinema history, Darth Vader. The secret marriage is not revealed to anyone until late on in the third film, the Revenge of the Sith when Obi-Wan Kenobi finds out about who she married.

The Young Queen

When we first see Padme, she is the elected Queen of Naboo whose planet is under siege from the Trade Federation over new taxation. Queen Amidala is rescued from the siege by two Jedi warriors (Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi) who aim to take her before the Grand Senate to plead for help. During the journey, the space craft that they are travelling in crash lands on Tatooine where Padme meets for the first time Anakin Skywalker, a slave. Despite being told to remain on the ship, Padme swaps places with one of her hand maidens and joins the Jedis as they look for a piece of equipment to repair their craft. The Jedi's probably know that the Hand Maiden is Padme but choose to ignore it.

The age difference between Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker shrinks by the second film. The age difference is seen as a major plot hole in the films. After arranging for Anakins release from being a slave, they (Qui-gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Jar Jar, C-3PO) leave for the Senate. Not accepting the opinion of the Senate who want to send a fact-finding team back to the planet, Queen Amidala returns with the Jedi Knights to fight the blockade. Padme leads a small force into the Royal Palace to confront Nute Gunray. In the first film, Padme Amidala's character wore a lot of make up for certain parts of the film, however they toned the make up down a lot in the following films.

Padme Amidala's Bodyguard and Romance

In the second film, Padme is targeted by assassins so Jedi Knights Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker are assigned to protect her. Anakin has aged considerably whereas Padme has only aged a few years. After chasing one of the assassins through the streets of Coruscant, Obi-Wan leaves Anakin with Padme. Padme is no shrinking violet, she allowed herself to be bait with the help of R2-D2 and Anakin Skywalker to flush out any assassins.

After the assassination attempt, Padme Amidala takes Anakin on a tour of her home planet where it is hoped Padme can blend in and not be recognised. As they hide themselves, they get closer to one another. It is on Naboo that their romance begins to grow. He takes her back to Tatooine where they first met so that he can rescue his mother. On the planet, Anakin meets the people who would later care for his children, Lars Owen and his wife Beru. Anakin is unable to rescue his mother and she dies in his arms. During Anakins' rescue attempt, Padme stays with the Owens.

When Obi-Wan requests help from Geonosis, the two lovers don't hesitate to help. It is not long before the three heroes (Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padme Amidala) make their escape from being fed to a variety of creatures. When Anakin says he can't go, Padme retorts and says his orders were to protect Padme and that Padme is going to rescue Obi-Wan and that Anakin therefore must join her.

On the planet, after doing some investigative work, both Padme and Anakin are captured by the Geonosians. Padme Amidala, Obi-Wank Kenobu and Anakin Skywalker are reunited as they are tied to poles to be eaten a variety of animals in the Geonosian Colosseum. This is similar to what happened in Ancient Rome when the Christians who were fed to the Lions. During the fight, Padme's shirt gets ripped slightly and then seconds latter, her whole midriff is on display. Its not quite on the same scale as Princess Leia and the metal bikini.

Their escape is helped by the arrival of Jedi Knights and Senate stormtroopers. It is a rare sight to see Mace Windu showing off his lightsaber skills. After the crisis is over, Padme Amidala marries Anakin in secret.

When Padme Amidala falls off the craft and lands on soft sand, Anakin wanted to go back and get her but Obi-Wan got Anakin to focus on taking on Count Dooku.

Age Difference between Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker

In the films Padme Amidala is only supposed to be four years older than Anakin but reality is different. According to IMDB, there is an eight years difference between the two characters in the first film but in subsequent films, they are the same age in real life. In the films, Padme Amidala was supposed to be a bit younger than how the character was portrayed, Padme is supposed to be 14 and Anakin is 9/10. The actress, Natalie Portman was 18 at the time for the first film and Jake Lloyd, aka Anakin Skywalker was 10. The second film is supposed to be set ten years after the first one, therefore Padme is supposed to be 24 and Anakin 20, in reality both are 21. The ages of the two characters during the final film are supposed to be 24 and 27. Ref: Yoda's Data Pad

Clone Wars

Padme Amidala plays a vital role during the Clone Wars, whilst Anakin and Ahsoka Tano are trying to save Jabba, the Hutt's ill son. Padme goes on a solo mission to visit Ziro, one of Jabba's uncles to see if he can provide support and help for the operation. Padme discovers that Ziro is working alongside Count Dooku to undermine Jabba but manages to escape. Ziro wants to take over the Hutt empire but Padme foils the plans and forces Ziro to confess what he has done.

During the subsequent cartoon series, Padme Amidala has a smaller role in the series than her husband. For most of it, Padme works within the confines of the Senate trying to get them on her side but with a few off-world missions of her own.

Pregnancy and Death of Padme Amidala

During the time of when the Chancellor Palpatine finally makes his move to become Emperor Palpatine, Padme stays in the background, pregnant with her children. Padme and Anakin had married in secret because the Jedi are not allowed to be married. If it was discovered that Padme and Anakin did indeed marry then Anakin could be kicked out of the Jedi Order. Obi-Wan discovers the truth but doesn't report Anakin as he has no time to deal with it. Padme organises a series of diplomatic meetings with other senators to discuss the crisis.

When Anakin finally turns to the Dark Side, she leaves her Coruscant home to persuade Anakin to come back to the Republic. Anakin had gone to the volcanic planet Mustafar to kill the leaders of the separatists. When Padme confronts her husband, Anakin hits her as he doesn't believe her anymore. Obi-Wan then takes on Anakin in a fight to the death across the lava rivers of the planet.

Unable to reconcile what has happened, Padme dies in childbirth after naming her children Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia with her final breathe. Before Padme Amidala dies, she says she still believes there good in her husband Anakin who unknown to Padme has now become Darth Vader.

In star Wars VI - Return of the Jedi Luke asks Leia if Leia remembers their mother to which Leia says she does a little. However as we know, the woman she is probably talking about is not Padme but someone who looked after Leia. Leia and Luke were separated as soon as they were born so neither of them knew each other or their mother.

Padme Amidala is not force sensitive like her children are and therefore won't be returning as a ghost. We have probably seen the last of Padme save for any brief shots if any.
