Tauriel is a fictional female Elf in the Lord of the Rings film series who was played on screen by Evangeline Lilly. Tauriel, the female Wood Elf is not in the original J.R.R. Tolkein story of the Hobbit. The character was created by the director, Peter Jackson as there was a lack of female characters. In addition to the creation, the director also created a story arc where Tauriel falls in love with Kili, one of the dwarves that Thorin Oakenshield has recruited to help win back the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon who had taken it over.
Tauriel is eager to help the Dwarves but Legolas is more reluctant to do so. When Tauriel decides she must help the Dwarves, she leaves the safety of her Wood Elf castle and rushes off to help them declaring it is their fight which Legolas disagrees.
Before KIli came onto the scene, she had had a romantic interest in Legolas Greenleaf which had fizzled to nothing. Slightly heartbroken, Legolas left the Wood Elves and journey to Rivendell.
