Thanos is a fictional male Titan in the The Avengers comic series who was played on screen by Josh Brolin. Thanos is the supervillain in the Marvel universe. His sole purpose is to destroy half the universe's population. He believe by killing so many, he will save so many.
His home world of Titan is destroyed, he is the only one left. Titan was a highly advanced world but its overpopulation led to its downfall and he only exists. Whilst the comic has the Saturnian moon Titan as his home world, Titan in the film is a far away planet who location is not revealed.
By collecting the Infinity Stones spread throughout the galaxy, he can put them into his Infinity Gauntlet, click his fingers and wipe out half of all life in the Universe. By the end of Infinity Wars, he has done just that, got all Infinity Stones, clicked his fingers and wiped out half of nearly everyone.
The comic book had Thanos wipe out half the universe but Thanos didn't do it to save the universe, the comic Thanos was obessed with Death which he thought he could please. Death was an actual character rather than the word Death.
Below is the list of the Infinity/Soul Stones that Thanos sought for his gauntlet to wipe out half the universe's population.
The orange soul stone was located by Thanos on Vormir, a desertted rock planet. The only occupant was Red Skull who had been sent there. The only way to get the stone was to sacrifice a life for a life so Thanos sacrificed his adopted daughter, Gamora for the stone.
The stone was found and investigated by Hydra under the control of Red Skull during the Second World War. S.H.I.E.L.D. would eventually retrieve the stone and ultimately hand it to the Asgardians for safekeeping. Thanos would attack Asgard to retrieve the object.
Thanos had this stone from the start but he then leant it to Loki to launch the first attack on Earth culminating in the first Avengers defence. It would then change hands a number of times before being used as the head stone in Vision.
The Reality Stone was to be used by Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves to turn the world to Darkness. The plan failed through the combined efforts of both Thor, Loki and Jane Foster. Loki had been given an opportunity to redeem himself which he took. Loki faked his own death during the battle.
The power stone was the stone that Peter Quill found at the start of the Guardians of the Galaxy. It would be retrieved by Ronan the Accuser then after his defeat, handed to the Nova Corps. Thanos would then retrieve it from the Nova Corps.
The Stone was referred to as the Eye of Agamotto. When the Eye was created, they did not know the power of the stone at the time. The stone was turned into a pendant and handed down over time to eventually find itself in the hands of Dr Stephen Strange. The Stone allows the person to manipulate time.
