Thanos - The Avengers

Thanos from The Avengers played by Josh Brolin.

Thanos is a fictional male Titan in the The Avengers comic series who was played on screen by Josh Brolin. Thanos is the supervillain in the Marvel Universe. His sole purpose is to destroy half the universe's population. He believe by killing so many, he will save so many.

His home world of Titan is destroyed, he is the only one left. Titan was a highly advanced world but its overpopulation led to its downfall and he only exists. Whilst the comic has the Saturnian moon Titan as his home world, Titan in the film is a far away planet who location is not revealed.

He saved Gamora from being killed and adopted her to become a trained assassin and thief along with half-sister nebula. In addition to his adopted daughters, he had Ronan and Proxima Midnight as an operative.

By collecting the Infinity Stones spread throughout the universe, he plans to put them into his Infinity Gauntlet, click his fingers and wipe out half of all life in the Universe. After he has completed the mission, he will sit back and watch the Sun set.

By the end of Infinity War, he has done just that, got all Infinity Stones, clicked his fingers and wiped out half of nearly everyone.

The comic book had Thanos wipe out half the universe but Thanos didn't do it to save the universe, the comic Thanos was obessed with Death which he thought he could please. Death was an actual character rather than the word Death.

Although he made guest appearances in previous films, its only in Infinity War and Endgame that he has any substantial part to play in the films.

Infinity War

Thanos sends his subordinates to take the Time Stone from Doctor Stephen Strange. In doing so, New York is laid to waste by the two factions fighting. Eventually, Thanos manages to kidnap Doctor Strange with Tony Stark and Peter Parker both joining Strange onboard the ship.

Tony Stark with the help from Peter Park and the Guardians of the Galaxy eventually come face to face with Thanos on Titan. The Avengers attempt to stop the Titan from clicking his fingers but then Peter Quill gets too angry and starts hitting Titan. The control that the Avengers had on Thanos is lost and Thanos clicks his fingers.

With his mission now complete, Thanos retreats to an unhabited planet where he watches the sun rise, relaxed in the knowledge that he has done what he set out to do.

The Avengers arrive on the inhabited planet with help from Carol Danvers and her spaceship. They confront Thanos with Thor slicing off Thanos's head in revenge for the death of Loki in the previous film. Thanos is in a bad way, when he used the stones, he unleashed a massive amount of radiation which burnt him. Even though he was badly damaged, Thanos was still pleased for what he had done.

To prevent anyone from using the stones, Thanos destroyed the Infinity Stones. There was no way in which the damage could be undone. For the next five years, the Avengers were powerless until Scott Lang returned from the Quantum Realm with a plan.

The Avengers would attempt to travel back through history to borrow the Infinity Stones to make a new Infinity Gauntlet. When Nebula who had now switched sides and James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine visited Morag, they accidentally alerted Thanos that they were here. Past-Nebula swapped places with the Avengers-Nebula and allowed Thanos to come to the present.

Thanos was able to obtain all the gems at once sooner than he than originally took. Bruce Banner used the new Infinity Gauntlet to bring everyone back from the dead. The stage was set for a new final fight on the scarred landscape that had once been the location of the Avengers Headquarters.

Before Thanos could use the new gauntlet, Tony Stark was able to obtain the Gauntlet and click his fingers. This time, Thanos and his cronies were disintegrated instead of the Universe.
