Tom Zarek is a fictional male Kobolian ( 2003 ) councillor who works for Battlestar Galactica in the Battlestar Galactica franchise. He has been portrayed on screen by Richard Hatch. Tom Zarek was a Sagittaron terrorist who blew up government buildings causing the deaths of many people. He was on-board the prison ship Astral Queen when the Cylons attacked. Tom was being transported for a parole hearing, it was coming to the end of his prison term.
When Capt. Lee Adama ( Apollo ) goes to the Astral Queen (Bastille Day), he is held captive by the prisoners who are released from their cells. The prisoner leader identifies himself as Tom Zarek. Tom wants the prisoners to be treated as citizens and the President to step down as her reign is not democratic. Lee tells Zarek that there will be elections which annoys both Commander William Adama and President Laura Roslin.
When the elections come, Tom becomes a senator but fails in his attempt to be President.
Aghast at the thought of Commander William Adama doing a deal with Cylons that would see the fleet ships be upgraded wth Cylon technology, Tom convinced Lt. Felix Gaeta to carry out a mutiny and take over the ship. The coup wasn`t bloodless. Tom Zarek was released from his prison and made his way to the Colonial One where the Quorum of the Twelve was sitting. When the Quorum refused to agree with him, Tom had the Quorum massacred in cold blood.
Tom Zarek had himself judge on the trial of William Adama. William refused to have anything to do with the court and didn`t answer any questions. Felix Gaeta was going to be the prosecution lawyer and they got Romo Lumpkin in to defend William Adama. In the end, Zarek ordered the death of William Adama by firing squad which didn`t get carried out.
William Adama and Col. Saul Tigh led a popular revolt against the coup which ultimately saw Tom and Gaeta arrested and be shot by firing squad.
There was no Tom Zarek in the original series but Richard Hatch was in the series. Richard Hatched played the role of Capt. Lee Adama ( Apollo ) and had the same temptestuous relationship with Commander Adama played by Lorne Greene.Copyright: Vivendi Universal
