Jupiter is the daddy of the planets in the solar system. Jupiter is clearly the largest planet by a clear margin. The planet is a large gas giant with a possible rocky core but sending a probe to land on any rock that Jupiter might be hiding is nigh on impossible.. The planet Bespin from Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back is closest anyone has portrayed an alien Jupiter. Although Bespin has an breathable atmosphere, Jupiter doesn't have a breathable atmosphere. Any attempt at entering the atmosphere would be pure folly, the pressures of the atmosphere would crush any probe or space craft before it got into the atmosphere. Jupiter has a large number of moons including Europa with a possible thick ice covering which people say might contain life underneath. When you hear the term Jovian, it refers to the object being associated with the planet Jupiter.
In Jupiter Ascending, a humanoid race live inside Jupiter's atmosphere. However this would be impossible due to the extreme pressures and temperatures of the atmosphere.
Between Mars and Jupiter is the asteroid belt, a large of area of space where planetoids and large rocks orbit the Sun. Some theorize that the asteroids are from a planet that had failed to form because of the immense gravitational power of Jupiter.
The large red spot on Jupiter is large enough to fit two or three planets in. It has been raging for hundreds even thousands of years and will continue to do so long after you're have died.
If Jupiter didn't exist, we might not have been here. Because of the sheer immense gravity that Jupiter exerts, it has been able to pull asteroids and comets that would have cause a mass extinction safely into its atmosphere and destroy it. The most recent being the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet. The comet didn't pose a threat to our survival but it illustrates the power of Jupiter. Whilst being a hero, Jupiter has been accused of throwing out a planet from our solar system.
It has been theorized that the gas giant is a failed star, that was not big enough to start the chain reactions that would allow it to fuse hydrogen into helium. When it comes to being a star, its all about mass rather than size. The smallest star so far discovered is EBLM J0555-57Ab, a star that is smaller than Jupiter, located in the constellation of Pictor. Science Alert.
There are about 67 known Jupiter moons currently known about. However there could be more. Jupiter's moons were still being discovered in 2010, some time after the Voyager probes past by Jupiter and took the first pictures of the planet. Ganymede is the largest moon of any size in the solar system. Our Moon is the largest moon in comparison to the planet that it orbits. Callisto is about the same size roughly as Mercury, the inner most planet.
Like all the other planets in the solar system, it is named after an ancient God. Its name comes from the ancient Roman king of the Gods, Jupiter. Jupiter is equivalent to the Grecian god, Zeus. The planet got its name by being the largest planet and by being the largest, it was apt to be called Jupiter. Jupiter's wife, Saturn resides next to her husband in the heavens.
Jupiter's appearance is characterised by the large red spot that appears on the surface. The spot was first spotted (sorry) by English scientist Robert Hooke in 1664 and has been a source of fascination ever since. If its hard to imagine a storm on Earth that last more than a couple of hours, the Jupiter red spot will blow your mind then. The storm has been raging for at least 300 years and it seems that its not going to go out just yet. The red spot is about three times the size of the planet Earth. We don't know how old the storm has been raging, we only know its been raging since before we started to observe the planet through a telescope. The equivalent largest storm on Earth is said to be about 1000 miles across, a diddler in comparison. ref:B.B.C.
In addition to being the largest planet in the Solar System, it also holds the title of the oldest planet in the Solar System. Jupiter's core is believed to have been created a mere one million years after the creation of the solar system. They have determined this by looking at meteorites which gave clues to the age and origin. According to the news, the centre of Jupiter is a large rock which gas grew round it. Even though it has a rock centre, its not a place that is likely to have life or be one which we would be able to visit due to the extreme pressures in the atmosphere. Ref: Daily Mail
It may surprise you to learn that Saturn is not the only planet in the Solar System to have rings surrounding it. Jupiter as well as Uranus and the further gas planet Neptune all have rings. Jupiter's rings were discovered when Voyager 1 space probe flew past the planet in 1979. Jupiter and Saturn aren't the only gas planets that have rings, all the gas planets have rings. Gas giants aren't the only objects in the Solar System that are thought to have rings. The asteroid Chariklo has been discovered to have rings. The Saturnian moon Rhea is believed to have a ring system. Ref: Quora
