A secret British boat is attacked in the Ionian Sea, an area in Mediterranean Sea off the southern coast of Italy. On board is the Automatic Targeting Attack Communicator (ATAC) which is used to coordinate the Polaris nuclear submarines. James Bond is tasked by M with retrieving the device before it falls into the hands of General Gogol, K.G.B..
The mission takes James to northern Italy to meet Kristatos, a person who can help Bond.
Bond is helped by Melina Havelock whose father was assassinated because he was getting too close to the truth about what happened to the boat.
When Bond visits Greece, he is about to assassinate Milos Columbo who he believes is behind the operation but Milos turns the tables round and tells Bond the truth. With both Milos and Melina's help, James goes after Kristatos at the top of a large rock before General Gogol can arrive and collect the ATAC which gets thrown off the side of the rock and destroyed.
