Star Wars I - The Phantom Menace

Star Wars I - The Phantom Menace

Synopsis

Star Wars I - The Phantom Menace is a science fiction film not set within the Solar System which was released in 1999 and is directed by George Lucas.

Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are despatched to planetNaboo after the Trade Federation has blockaded the planet over a trade tax. The Jedi Knights collect Queen Padme Amidala and attempt to whisk her to Coruscant.

During their attempt to get to the Naboo palace, they stumble across Jar Jar Binks (the most hated character in the universe) who takes them to his underwater hideout but they are kicked out. The three use an underwater submarine to make it to the Palace of Theed after avoiding a number of hungry fish.

On route to Coruscant, seat of the Galactic Council, they are forced to make a detour to Tatooine because their craft is damage. The two Jedi Knights venture into the town of Mos Espa where they meet a young Anakin Skywalker with his mum Shmi Skywalker. The Skywalkers are the property of a Toydarian slave trader called Watto. Watto agrees to let them leave if Anakin wins a Pod Race thus making Watto money.

They enter the race which Anakin wins but when they go back to see Watto, he relents on his agreement and only allows the Jedis to take Anakin and his unfinished C-3PO. As the Jedi`s are about to leave the planet, they are attacked by Darth Maul who has caught up with them, Maul is determined to stop the Queen from pleading her case. Qui-gon is able to fend off the Sith Lord and the craft departs.

Anakin is presented before the council which contains Mace Windu and Yoda as senior Jedi Masters. Anakin is accepted into training as a Jedi Knight.

Padme Amidala pleads her case to the Galactic Council against the Trade Federation but gets nowhere so she returns with her Jedi Knights and Anakain to Naboo to save her planet.

Jar-Jar takes the Jedi Knights to a secret hiding place of the Gungans where the Jedi Knights and Padme Amidala plead their case to the leader of the Gungans to help. After careful considering, the Gungan Leader agrees to help the humans and orders his troops into place on the battlefield.

Whilst the Gungans fight the Trade Federation robots, Padme Amidala assisted by the two Jedi Knights and her loyal guard Captain Panaka lead an assault on the Theed Palace where the Trade Federation is holed up.

The film finishes with Anakin sneaking into a Theed fighter and accidentally launches it as a Trade Federation craft hovering over the planet and destroys it. The craft controlled the Trade Federation robots on the planet fighting the Gungans.

This film was the highest grossing of all the six films prior to Star Wars - The Force Awakens and because of its poor storyline and irritating Jar-Jar, the following films didn`t do quite as good as they should have been. May be the force will be with the seventh episode out in December 2015.

Cast Members

Darth Maul ( Ray Park )

Darth Maul ( Ray Park ) Darth Maul is a Sith Lord that is sent by his master, Darth Sidious to prevent Padme Amidala from pressing her case against the Trade Federation at the Galactic Senate. He is unique amongst Sith Lords in the films in that he wields a two handed Lightsabre.

After Padme Amidala escaped from Naboo, she is forced to land on Tatooine to repair her ship. On the planet, Darth Maul catches up with the Padme and her Jedi Knight guards but the Qui-gon is able to fend off Darth Maul so that Padme Amidala`s group can escape.

When Padme Amidala returns to Naboo, Darth Maul is waiting for the entourage for a final showdown. Maul manages to separate the two Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi and fight them individually. Before Obi-Wan is able to confront Darth Maul, Qui-gon is killed by Darth Maul. Obi-Wan is able to exact revenge on Darth Maul by killing him.

In the extended universe, Darth Maul returns from the dead with a pair of mechanic legs. He first appears in Brothers episode where Darth Maul`s brother finds him in Lothor Minor planet and gradually helps to regain himself. It is highly unlikely that Darth Maul will make another appearance but Zabrakaliens will most likely make an appearance.

Jar Jar Binks ( Ahmed Best )

Jar Jar Binks ( Ahmed Best ) Jar Jar Binks has the reputation of being the most hated character in the whole of star Wars. When the producers came up with the character, they probably thought Jar Jar would be a comedic character, who some people would find funny but people found him nothing but irritating. Jar Jar appears as a main character in Star Wars I - Phantom Menace but then only briefly appears in `Star Wars II - Attack of the Clones` as an Ambasssador for the planet of Naboo in the Galactic Senate.. Jar Jar is a very clumsy, idiotic Gungan ho resolves to help the Jedis whether they like it or not. Jar-Jar was expelled from the rest of the Gungan community on the grounds that he was too clumsy.

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi save Jar Jar Bink`s life and in return Jar Jar offers to help the Jedis in any way they want. Jar Jar takes the Jedi`s to the undwater Gungan city so that they can plead for help in defeating the Trade Federation but it falls on deaf ears from Boss Nass, the leader of the Gungans. When Jar Jar is able to placed in chains and taken away, the Jedi`s agree to take Jar Jar with them. Jar Jar journeys with the Jedis to the city of Theed, the capital for the humans on the planet and then to Tatooine where they meet Anakin Skywalker who is still a slave for Watto.

In the later prequel films, his role becomes very limited compared to the role that he had in Phantom Menace and he stops being so much of an idiot. He becomes a representative at the Senate on behalf of his planet Naboo and it is him who suggests giving more powers to Palpatine unknown to him that he is a Sith Lord.

Qui-Gon Jinn ( Liam Neeson )

Qui-Gon Jinn ( Liam Neeson ) Qui-Gon Jinn is a veteran Jedi Knight who appears only in star Wars I - The Phantom Menace but mentioned in Star Wars III - Revenge of the Sith as coming back as a ghost at the end. Qui-gon is Obi-Wan Kenobi`s mentor and friend.

Along with Obi-wan Kenobi, Qui-gon are the ones who find Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and sets him on the road to being a Jedi and then who turns to be a Lord of the Sith under the influence of Palpatine.

Qui-gon dies in battle against Darth Maul during the battle of Naboo as they (Obi-wan and Qui-gon) try to free the planet from the Trade Federation who have laid siege to the planet over a trade dispute.

Watto ( Andrew Secombe )

Watto ( Andrew Secombe ) Watto is a Toydarian trader who owns Anakin and his mother Shmi Skywalker. Watto refuses to sell and give up either of them. Qui-Gon does a deal with Watto that if Anakin wins a pod-race, he agrees to give the slave and his mother to the Jedi knights. When Anakin wins the race, only Anakin is released but Shmi must stay behind. As a Toydarian, Watto is immune to the effects of Jedi mind control tricks that Qui-Gon Jinn tries to use on him to release Anakin. Watto as someone who is always after making money agrees to give Qui-Gon Anakin Skywalker if Anakin wins a Pod-race which Anakins does.

He makes a brief appearance in `Star Wars II - Attack of the Clones` when Anakin and Padme Amidala visit Tatooine to get Anakins Mother Shmi released. Shmi Skywalker had been sold on.

Captain Panaka ( Hugh Quarshie )

Captain Panaka ( Hugh Quarshie ) Panaka is the chief of the Royal Guard on Naboo. He is prominent in star Wars I - The Phantom Menace but in the later films, his involvement is reduced. Panaka provides protection to Padme Amidala as leaves her home world to plead her case to the Galactic Council. He does not return in any of the following Star Wars films.
