Universe Guide

Waterworld is a science fiction prediction of the Future on Earth which was released in 1995 and is directed by Kevin Reynolds.

Film based on the premise that the worlds ice caps will melt causing the water level to raise and where there was once land, there is now water. If the ice at both poles were to melt as a result of global warming, the water level would rise a few feet but nowhere near as much as that is predicted in the film. This film takes global warming to the extremes. Average temperature in Antartica would need to rise 38 degrees for all the ice to melt. Even if all of the ice did melt, only a few places would be underwater. A lot of people live by water and their homes will be effected forcing them in land.

Mariner, a half man, half fish due to having grown gills behind his neck lives on a boat minding his business. He meets Helen and her daughter Enola who it is believed can show the way to land. A group of marauders known as Smokers and led by Deacon want the girl at any costs. The Marauders ship is the oil tanker the Exxon Valdez which was responsible for the worst American oil spill until the Deepwater Horizon incident. Mariner agrees to help Helen find safety. When they do find land, Mariner rejects land life and returns to the waters.

The film was beset by rumours and disasters and went over budget. Fortunately the film grossed more than it made.
