You Only Live Twice

You Only Live Twice is a Spy film with a space connection which was released in 1967 and is directed by Lewis Gilbert. The film's theme tune is 'You Only Live Twice' and was sung by Nancy Sinatra.

Space capsules are disappearing in space and both America and Russia are blaming one another. If it continues, the two nations will go to War.

James Bond is in bed with a Japanese woman who betrays him and he is killed by masked gunmen. James Bond is sent to the bottom of the sea as a mark of respect but is picked up an awaiting submarine. His death had been faked. 007 is tasked with finding out what has been happening to the space capsules. They believe the answer lies somewhere in Japan. After the disappearance of a capsule, strange activity was sited near a extinct volcano. James is ordered to work with the Japanese Intelligence Service to find out who is behind it.

James is taught the finer points of Japan culture by Tiger Tanaka and how to pretend to be a Japanese man. He is expected to take a wife, when the first wife (Aki) is killed, he is shown another (Kissy). The assassin poisoned his first wife when James and his wife were in bed.

Investigations lead to the inside of an extinct volcano which is being used by SPECTRE for capturing and holding American and Russian capsules. With the assistance of Japanese commandoes, James Bond defeats SPECTRE. The film also marks the appearance of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion).
