Themisto, Moon of Jupiter

Themisto is a Moon that orbits round the planet Jupiter. It is also know by other designations, JXVIII, S/1975 J1. Its mass is estimated/calculated at being 689,387,479,224,709 kg. Its density has been calculated at being 2.6. Its volume is 268.

Themisto was discovered on First time: 30 September 1975 , Second time: 6 August 2000 by First time: Charles Thomas Kowal and Elizabeth Roemer , Second time: Scott Sander Sheppard, David C. Jewitt, Yanga Roland Fernández and Eugene A. Magnier.

The orbital period, i.e. the period it takes to complete an orbit round Jupiter is 130.02 days. The figure is also known as the sidereel period. The figure comes from N.A.S.A..

The Equatorial Radius of the object is 4km. The Equatorial Radius is based on the assumption of the Albedo value. The value is the radius in km of the said object at the Equator.

The albedo of the object is 0.04. The Albedo is the amount of radiation that is reflected back into space by the object.

The Escape Velocity of the object is 17 km/h. The Escape Velocity is the speed an object needs to be travelling in order to break free from the objects gravity. The larger an object is, the more velocity (speed) is needed to break free from the object. The Semi-Major Axis of the orbit is 7507, which is the furthest point from the centre to the edge of an elliptical point.

The equatorial circumference of Themisto is 25.1 km. The surface area of Themisto is 201.06. The surface gravity of the said item is 0.003. The Mean orbit velocity, that is the speed at which it orbits is 14891.00 km/h. The is the average distance in km of the object is from its parent 7507000.00.

The orbital inclination, the angle at which Themisto orbits in relation to the orbital plane is 45.67 degrees. The orbital eccentricity is 0.2424, it is the degree at which Themisto orbits close to a circular (0) orbit as opposed to an elliptical (1) orbit.

Themisto's Mythology Legend

Themisto is named after the daughter of the Greek river god Inachus. Themisto so many other characters in Greek mythology was a lover of Zeus. Themisto would bear a child Ister. When Hera, wife of Zeus found out, Themisto was changed into a bear as revenge.

Themisto Moon Group

Themisto is an unique moon of Jupiter and is therefore the only one of its group. Most of the other moons orbit in groups like Carme. Thermisto orbits in the direction as the planet.
