Jellyfish Nebula (IC443) Facts Supernova Remnant in Gemini

Jellyfish Nebula (IC443) is a supernova remnant object of interest in space. It lies at a distance of 5000 light years away in the constellation of Gemini.

It is also referred to as IC443 which is short for Index Catalogue number 443. The Index Catalogue is an update to the earlier NGC catalogue.

The Supernova Remnant's location is 06:17:13 (R.A.) and 22:31:05 (Dec.).

The Jellyfish nebula is all that remains of a star that exploded about an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 years ago. The original star would have been a star that is many times larger than the Sun is. At the centre of the remnant would be a neutron star or a pulsar. The explosion would have cause the particles of debris and dust that was nearby to be superheated. More recent studies believe the remnant might be older than 10,000 years, in fact, it might be 30,000 years. N.A.S.A.

The location of the remnant is near Tejat Prior also known as Eta Geminorum which is on the foot of Castor, the twin rather than Castor star. The star at the head of the twin is known as Castor and is second brightest star in the Gemini constellation, Castor. The brightest star in Gemini if you wanted to know is Pollux which has the designation of being Beta Geminorum even though it is brighter than Castor. At least though Pollux can console itself as it has an orbiting exoplanet.
